вЂњShe let me express myself.вЂќ He remembers listening to вЂњChangesвЂќ by 2Pac on a tape player every day as soon as he got home from school, and first hearing вЂњOnly TimeвЂќ by Enya during nap time in kindergarten. вЂњShe got me my first pair of skinny jeans from Wal-Mart, when everyone was just being homophobic and shit around those times,вЂќ he says. He found rock and indie music by listening to the radio, and with a lot of encouragement from his mom, he dove in. вЂњBeing around Black people and white people, anyone from all cultures, IвЂ™ll feel like IвЂ™m not fully there with them.вЂќ вЂњTrauma is such a thrown-on word these days, but itвЂ™s the only word I can think of,вЂќ he explains. LaвЂ™ron didnвЂ™t feel like he fit in in Wisconsin. вЂњI asked a girl out one time in middle school, and she said she couldnвЂ™t date me because of where I lived.вЂќ вЂњWhen I first moved there, people considered it the hood,вЂќ he says. вЂњWe moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, with 20 dollars, and then we stayed in a shelter,вЂќ says LaвЂ™ron, whose family bounced around between their extended familyвЂ™s homes before settling down in a low-income housing complex on the north side of town called Summerfield Place Apartments. HeвЂ™s never met his father, but he has spoken to him over the phone since he says that his dad was released from prison a few years ago.ДЄway from Cleveland, LaвЂ™ronвЂ™s mom tried to provide a better life for her family, working as a seamstress and a hotel housekeeper. His mother raised him, his older brother and sister, and cousin there.

вЂњMy mother moved me to Wisconsin when I was a kid, for a better future kind of thing, because Ohio wasnвЂ™t the best,вЂќ he says. LaвЂ™ron spent the first two years of his life in East Cleveland, and the rest of his childhood in WisconsinвЂ™s Fox Valley, a cluster of small cities around the Fox River and Lake Winnebago in the middle of Madison and Green Bay. вЂњItвЂ™s fucking crazy to hear вЂEstellaвЂ™ at a concert,вЂќ LaвЂ™ron says, вЂњhearing people screaming it back the way I heard it.вЂќ вЂњEstellaвЂќ evolved from there, making its way onto YouTube, Spotify, and then a real-life performance onstage. Kind of like old-school days, where you would write songs when you were in a band in a garage.вЂќ We would jam and come up with an idea, and Kenny would have a mic and he would sing. вЂњUsually, you come up with the chord progression, maybe an idea, and then write a chorus,вЂќ he says. One day itвЂ™s gonna be a song.вЂ™вЂќД«arker describes their process as backwards, with LaвЂ™ron singing the hook and then building the instrumentation around it. вЂњThe hook for вЂEstella,вЂ™ I was like, вЂIвЂ™m gonna save that shit. вЂњI just would have hooks and make songs a cappella,вЂќ he says.

вЂњEstellaвЂќ came from a blueprint that LaвЂ™ron had been singing in his head for two years. But LaвЂ™ron didnвЂ™t play guitar, piano, or bass, and wasnвЂ™t surrounded with other musicians in Wisconsin to help put his ideas onto tape. Previously, LaвЂ™ron had only put out a handful of tracks, having snuck into a recording studio with his friend and producer Yoshi Flower on a previous L.A. HeвЂ™s not just coming in and thereвЂ™s writers helping him write or coming up with lyrics or ideas. вЂњHeвЂ™s one of the best writers I know,вЂќ says Barker. There, in BarkerвЂ™s studio, they laid down вЂњEstellaвЂќ in an hour, and the rest of SURVIVORвЂ™S GUILT over two weeks on a second visit. The two met on Instagram, trading comments, and then DMs, until Barker invited LaвЂ™ron to record with him in L.A.
